Dead Pool Glossary
- Age Points
- Points awarded based on a celeb's age at death. It is calculated as (100 - age). If a celeb is over 100, then 0 age points are awarded.
- Alternate
- See Wildcard
- Bag Day
- The day at which the game winner got and held first place. NOTE: this is not yet implemented!
- Club Nada
- The initial state for all players at the start of each game. It indicates that the player has received no hits. Some players stay in Club Nada for more than one game.
- Dry Spell
- A long period without any deaths.
- First Blood
- The first hit of the game. (Added 2005)
- Hit
- A celebrity's death.
- Hit Density
- A method to quantify the "tightness" of a player's hits. It is a calculation of the number of hits over a given period of time within the same game. The closer in time that the hits occur will raise the Hit Density. Each combination of a player's hits are evaluated, and the highest calculation is determined to be that player's Hit Density. A single hit is noted as a Hit Density of 0. A player that gets all 10 of their hits on the same day would achieve a Hit Density of 100. Note, however, that this number is only useful as a relative measure against other player's Hit Density. Many thanks to Cathryn Innacola for her help with this!
- KDP
- Short for "Kaufman's Dead Pool".
- Last Breath
- The latest/last hit in the game. Note that this is calculated during the course of the game, so the "Last Breath" designation shifts from player to player until the game is over. Yep, just like a game of "Hot Potato". (Added 2005)
- Necromatic
- The system used to maintain the deadpool and it's website.
- Rank Points
- Points awarded based on the player's ranking of a celeb. A player's #1 pick gets 10 points, while their #10 pick gets 1 point. Rank points were instituted starting with the 1999 game.
- Referral Points
- Points awarded to a player for each current player that was directly referred by that person. Referral points were instituted in the 2000 game. Note that the game's maintainer does not get awarded referral points. So far, no game has been won based on referral points.
- Solo
- A hit that only one person had. If another player picked that celeb as their wildcard, the player still gets credit for a solo.
- Stats Page: % Distinct Picks Hit
- The percentage of picks hit based on Distinct Celebs Picked.
- Stats Page: % Picks Hit
- The percentage of picks hit based on Total Celebs Picked.
- Stats Page: Distinct Celebs Picked
- The total number of DIFFERENT celebs picked by a person over the entire career, including wildcards. If a player picks the same celeb in multiple years, then that celeb is counted ONLY once, no matter how many years picked.
- Stats Page: Total Celebs Picked
- The total number of celebs picked by a person over their entire career, including wildcards. If a player picks the same celeb in multiple years, then that celeb is counted once for every year.
- Tie Breaker Points
- When multiple players have the same number of hits, the combination of Age Points, Referral Points and Rank Points is used to determine the standing. Rank Points were not used until 1999, and Referral Points were not used until 2000.
- Weighted Finish
- A method to measure standing between games with differing number of entries. The higher the number, the better, with the best possible being 100%. As an example: coming in 2nd out of 5 entries is 60.0%, while coming in 2nd out of 10 entries is 80.0%. Even though both players came in 2nd, the one with 10 entries finished better than 8 other players, while the first only bested 3. In other words; the 2/10 player finished better than 80% of the players, while the 2/5 player finished better than only 60% of the players. (Added 2005)
- Wildcard
- Player's lists are collected as much as 2-3 weeks before the start of the game. If one of the celebs on that list dies before the start of the game, or is disqualified for other reasons (already dead, not famous enough, etc...), then the 11th pick, the Wildcard, is used in the event that the game's maintainer cannot contact the player before the start of the game. After the start of the game, they hold no game value. Starting with the 2005 game, "Wildcard" pick will be referred to as "Alternate" pick, with no change in how the pick will be used.
